[Alfie greets and makes nice with newcomers when he comes across them, but he doesn't go out of his way to seek them out. He's not interested in being part of any de facto welcome wagon, especially not now that more and more people are filtering their way in, either to use the Meadous as a waypoint or to settle down and stay; that can be a job for people like Meulin and Harley. He does, however, notice new houses as he passes them by, and today there's one on his regular walking route. He takes note of the name on the mailbox - Beauregard, good lord - and is all set to continue ambling onwards when a flash of movement catches his eye. Is that--

-- yes. That absolutely is his cat, leaping up onto the windowsill and slipping in through the open window.

With a sigh, he turns and heads towards the door instead, giving it a firm knock.]

[ there are... bits that she recognizes, she thinks. it's a very similar language. maybe a different dialect. she gets part of it, and then: ]

I get that it's Elvish, but it's - weird. It's not quite right? You're speaking Elvish like from another world, right?

Royce's world. He's taught me a bit. I've also got Yiddish, though that's not on your list, is it.

[ ahhh... that'd make sense. the hooded guy being some kind of elf makes a lot of sense. or maybe he's just a really sneaky human, but she figures there has to be a reason he knows the language, right? ]

It's not, no. What is it? Is it from a certain place? [ nerd mode activated! she's scooted forward on her seat, fascinated. ]

It's the language of the Yids. Jews. One of 'em; I don't know the others. We're a culture; a people.

[ she nods. ]

I know about Jews. I didn't know there was a language specifically for them, though. [ when you're in a murdergame with nothing to do during the day, you read a whole lot and get very disjointed bits of information. ] Everybody on Earth is human, right? On your Earth.

As far as I know.

[He says, slightly amused.]

But the vampires and werewolves and things may be keeping themselves very well hidden. Why do you ask?

[ she makes a face at him. ]

I'm just curious. Every Earth is slightly different. Yours doesn't have anything but humans, but Akira's has a talking cat and Luna's had like, robots, and then A-Sang and Wei Ying's world has zombies, but they're all Earths.

We'll have robots in the future, I expect, but I do hope to avoid the zombies. The year, for me, was nineteen twenty-two; that's behind many people that I've met.

Oh, shit, yeah. That's far back. I had two friends from the nineteen eighties, and then a bunch from the two-thousands.

[ a pause. ] Our year system doesn't match up with Earth's in Exandria, so.

Did you meet anyone from your own world in either of these murder games?

[He says it almost gently; he's aware that it might be a sore subject.]

[ a pause, and she rubs at her neck. ]

No. But that's fine. That's good. I didn't want them to be there. [ her hand slides up again to adjust the beanie. ]

I felt the same, in the place I was before.

So you came from a place before this one too? Gwen was telling me a bit about hers.

Gwen's was lovely.

[Which is an absolute fucking relief.]

And Mercy, she came from Elan; from her home world. Royce and I, though - well. We were in Norfinbury.

[He pauses here, in case she's familiar. It's developed something of a reputation in the Meadous, after all.]

[ ahh, she's heard about the dreaded norfinbury. sounds like a drawn out version of her own shit she went through. maybe worse. ]

How long have you been out?

That's a complicated question. Royce and I have been here for over three years, now, but with only some of our memories of Norfinbury. Last year, we wished for the rest of it; everything up to the end. It's all a bit mixed up in my head, I'm afraid.

[ she wrinkles her nose. ]

You... wait, what? [ that doesn't make any sense to her. the rest of their memories? they didn't... have all of them? ]

Don't ask me; I don't know how it fucking works.

[ well, okay. beau flops back down onto the couch, staring up at the ceiling. ]

Sounds like it sucked.

We were meeting people who'd been there longer, and who remembered more than we did. Royce did not like that.

I guess that makes sense. I think it'd drive me nuts not knowing everything that happened.

Just Royce didn't like it, huh. [ but both of them got their memories back... she's observant. she might be starting to see how this arrangement works, based on what gwen told her. ]

Well, I wasn't jumping for joy over it, was I.

[But no, if it had just been him, he wouldn't have wished for the memories. Still, it wasn't an experience he was going to let Royce go through alone.]

[ she looks amused. ]

These places make you real ride or die for people, huh. [ she adjusts her beanie again. ]

"Ride or die"?

[He's learned plenty of modern slang - he hadn't even blinked at "sucks" - but this one is new to him.]

[ she's picked up so much slang from her murder games it's ridiculous. ]

Yeah, like - you'd do anything for someone. Ride out their shit with them. Or die trying. [ she's not sure she understands the origin of the expression but she gets the gist. ]
